Reduce and Reuse First!
Before you recycle, check to see if your items can be repaired or reused by someone else. The City holds a Repair Cafe with the Rockfall Foundation and RiverCOG twice a year (currently suspended due to COVID) where expert seamstresses are available to make basic repairs. These events are usually held in the spring and the fall. Sign up to receive recycling notifications to stay informed on future Repair Cafe events!
There are several options to recycle textiles in Middletown. All textiles can be recycled at a textile recycling bin at the many of the Middletown Public Schools and the Senior and Recreation Center on Durant Terrace. Check this list of places to drop off textiles(PDF) to see if your school has a textile recycling bin. Acceptable items include:
- Stuffed Animals
Soiled and ripped items are acceptable. No wet, mildewed or greasy items. All proceeds from these containers go towards each individual school.
All textiles, including soiled, stained. items with holes and single socks can be included in the mentioned programs or brought to local charities such as Salvation Army or Goodwill. A Goodwill bin is also available at the Middletown Recycling Center.
Curbside Textile Collection - Currently suspended
COVID-19 Update - Curbside collection of the pink textile bags is suspended as of Dec. 14, 2020 because of the increase in COVID-19 cases. In the meantime, we suggest residents use one of the many convenient drop off boxes located throughout the city. Thank you.
Effective October,2018, Middletown started a new partnership with Simple Recycling to help residents recycle their clothing, shoes and accessories curbside.
Simple Recycling mailed pink plastic bags to residents. These bags can be used to place clothing and other textiles at the curb on your regular recycling day. Simple Recycling will come by during the day and collect all pink bags with textiles. This pertains to all residents in Middletown, whether you are serviced by the City Sanitation District or a private hauler. Simple Recycling cannot collect from residents who live in multifamily complexes.
*If you did not receive a pink bag, contact Simple Recycling or the City Recycling Coordinator to deliver you one. Bags are also available at the Public Works Department in City Hall and Russell Library. Once you place items out for collection once, they will leave you bags in return.
Please remember pink bags should be placed out next the recycling cart the night before. Crews start early in the morning. The bags will get picked up at a different time than the recycling carts. If your bag is missed by the end of the day, contact Simple Recycling and report a missed stop. They will communicate directly with you to get your bag picked up as soon as possible.
