PRESS RELEASE - FATAL MVA - Washington St


On November 3, 2022 at approximately 4:31pm the Middletown Police were dispatched to the area of 1189 Washington Street for a serious motor vehicle collision with injuries. On arrival, officers located two vehicles in the roadway which had both sustained heavy damage. One male operator was trapped inside his 2015 Chevy Sonic sedan. A second male operator was found in the roadway near his 2015 Nissan Altima sedan. Middletown Fire, Hunter's Ambulance, and Middlesex Hospital Paramedics all responded to the scene. 

The operator of the Chevy Sonic was identified as 59-year-old Jeffrey Reitmeier of 1189 Washington Street in Middletown. Reitmeier succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on scene.

The operator of the Nissan Altima was identified as 45-year-old James Hardy of 195 Ridgefield Drive in Middletown. Hardy was transported to Hartford Hospital for non-life threatening injuries and is in stable condition.

The collision is currently being investigated by the Middletown Police Traffic Division. Washington Street is closed between Camp Street and Ballfall Rd but will re-open within the hour.
