The City of Middletown Will be Canvassing in the City Sanitation District to Explain the New Phase of the Save As You Throw Trash and Food Scrap Co-Collection Program
The City of Middletown is alerting residents in the Sanitation District that representatives and volunteers from the Public Works Department will be visiting local neighborhoods throughout the month of October and November to offer information and answer questions on the next phase of the Save-as-you-throw trash and food scrap co-collection program.
The City ran a pilot program sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s (DEEP) Sustainable Materials Management Grant program to develop a system to provide residents with an economical and sustainable system to manage their waste and to address Connecticut’s solid waste disposal capacity issues.
The concept is simple: food waste that was previously included in the trash bin will now be collected in a green bag. The green bag(s) will be placed in the curbside trash collection carts along with the official city Save-as-you-throw orange bags. The bags will then be taken to a sorting line where they will be separated, with the trash going to a standard disposal location and the green bags going to the anaerobic digester which produces renewable energy from organic waste
Sanitation District customers using carts received a reduction in their bill and the cost of disposal of their trash is incorporated into the price of the official city bags. This way, the less they throw away, the more they save. Residents are encouraged to recycle right, divert materials from the trash if there’s options and purchase less packaging.
Canvassers will be visiting neighborhoods on weekdays between 3 – 7pm and on the weekends between 10am – 4pm.
Questions should be directed to the Recycling Division of the Public Works Office at 860-638-4855 or recycling@middletownct.gov.
