City of Middletown to conduct compliance checks of trash and recycling
The City of Middletown will be spot-checking trash and recycling carts and performing educational outreach in the Sanitation District for compliance with the new waste reduction program. The City has established the Save as You Throw program to save money, reduce waste, and increase recycling and food waste diversion. Property owners in the Sanitation District received a reduction in their sanitation bill and must now use the required city orange bags, which include the disposal cost that was previously part of their sanitation bill. If customers are not using the designated bags, they are not paying for the disposal of their waste, and the City will be unable to collect and dispose of waste for nonpaying customers. Customers also have the option of participating in the curbside collection of food scraps by using designated green bags to keep the food scraps segregated.
City outreach representatives will be spot-checking carts starting January 9, 2024. Carts that do not contain the required bags will not be emptied. Customers will need to bag the trash with the City’s official orange bags and call the City’s Public Works Department at 860-638-4858 to notify them it is ready for pickup.
