News Release - Arrest of Former MHS Teacher


On April 2, 2024, an arrest warrant was served on 35-year-old James Hanson who is a former Middletown High School Math teacher. Hanson is alleged to have had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a minor student. He taught at Middletown High from August 2022 through November 16, 2023 but was immediately placed on administrative leave when the investigation started.

Hanson turned himself in at Middletown Police Headquarters where he was charged with Sexual Assault 2nd Degree (5 counts), Sexual Assault 4th Degree (2 counts), Use of a computer to entice a minor, and Risk of Injury to a minor. Hanson’s arrest is the result of a lengthy investigation conducted by Middletown Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit and the Homeland Security Investigations Task Force.

Hanson was held on a $100,000 cash/surety bond and will be presented in court today.
