News Release - Assault on Court St November 1, 2025

On November 1, 2025 at approximately 2:21pm, Middletown Officers were dispatched to the area of Melilli Plaza for the report of an assault. On arrival, the complaint indicated that she was assaulted by a Hispanic male and provided officers with the suspect’s description and direction of travel.

The suspect was subsequently located in the area of 500 Main Street and positively identified as 56-year-old Joseph Lopez of Middletown, CT.

After investigation, it was determined that the victim was leaving Democratic Headquarters on Court Street and walking 15-20 feet behind Lopez. She did not know Lopez but closed the distance between the two. Lopez then abruptly turned around, faced the victim, and made a statement about her walking too fast. The victim reported that she Lopez then struck in the face twice before walking away. She had minor injuries to the face but did not require medical attention.

Lopez was arrested and charged with Breach of Peace 2^nd Degree and held on a $25,000 surety bond. He was presented in court on November 3, 2025.

Although the victim, whose name is not being released at this time, was leaving Democratic Headquarters when the assault occurred, there is no evidence to suggest that this was a politically motivated incident. There is no public safety threat at this time.
