Brig Smith serves as General Counsel of the City of Middletown. Prior to that, he served as one of the youngest City Attorneys in the history of Lansing, Michigan. He also serves as an adjunct professor of law, teaching Local Government Law at Quinnipiac University, and he previously taught Complex Civil Litigation at the Michigan State University College of Law.
Smith is nationally recognized. He was named the first-ever “Young Public Lawyer of the Year” by the International Municipal Lawyers Association and a "Rising Star" by Super Lawyers. He currently serves as IMLA's Regional Vice President for the Second Circuit and previously served as the President of the Connecticut Association of Municipal Attorneys. He also recently received the Connecticut Law Tribune's Excellence Award for General Counsel Impact.
A cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, Smith won the Williston Prize for outstanding negotiation skills and later went on to teach negotiation through the Harvard Program of Instruction for Lawyers. He received his undergraduate degree Phi Beta Kappa and with highest distinction from the University of Michigan. Before entering law, Smith served as a White House staffer. He lives in Middletown with his sons, Kai and Grayson.
