Call for Poet Laureate of Middletown

The City of Middletown Commission on the Arts has officially opened the call for nominations for the City of Middletown Poet Laureate. The appointed position of Middletown’s Poet Laureate serves as a creative platform to bring forth the voice of poetry and literature in our city. 

Submitted applications will be reviewed by a panel of community members and MCA Commissioners. The review process includes an interview. Selection and announcement will be made in October 2024.

Poets of the City of Middletown are encouraged to apply. Nominees must be at least 18 years of age at the time of their appointment. Deadline is closed. 

Qualifications

• Nominees must be at least 18 years of age at the time of their appointment.

• The Poet Laureate must have a strong desire to be actively engaged in the community by performing their own work and/or by sharing their down work and talent with the public. 

• Poets may self-nominate or be nominated by a Middletown resident. 

• Nominees may not be a Middletown Commission on the Arts (MCA) Commissioner or Staff.                         

• Nominees must be full time Middletown residents for at least one year prior to the nomination date.

• Nominees must be experienced in the field of poetry and able to fulfill the required duties of the position.

Poet Laureate Opportunities

• A reception in their honor.

• Promote awareness and public appreciation of poetry in the City of Middletown.

• Promote at least one public event per year or as requested by the Mayor, City Council or the MCA.

• Represent Middletown within the Connecticut Coalition of Poets Laureate.

Terms of Service

• The City Poet Laureate will serve for a term of 3 years and must maintain Middletown residency during their term.

• The Poet Laureate will engage as a nonvoting member of the MCA.
