Join City Recycling Coordinator Kim O’Rourke and UConn Master Composters, Tom Kalal and Hetti Motoc, to learn about the benefits of composting for your garden and for the environment. Compost that is created from household food waste and yard debris can be used as fertilizer around the yard, in vegetable gardens, flower beds and lawns. Compostable materials include fruit and vegetable scraps, egg shells, coffee grounds, leaves, grass clippings and garden clippings. Local resident and Master Composter, Hetti Motoc, will bring her worms and talk about vermicomposting, which is another way to compost at home.
The City is also holding a Community Compost Bin and Rain Barrel sale where residents and non-residents can purchase compost bins and rain barrels at reduced prices. Information on the sale will be available in early March. Customers must order on line and pick up their items on Sunday, May 17th in Middletown or Old Saybrook.
