Sanitation District Policies and Guidelines

Sanitation District Policies:

  • All trash must be in bags.  Cart customers must use official city orange bags for trash; green bags for food scraps.
  • Recycling is mandatory and must NOT be bagged in plastic bags.  It must be loose or in paper bags in the blue recycling carts or dumpsters.
  • No bulk material, such as furniture, demolition and construction debris or yard waste in trash carts or dumpsters.
  • Large amounts of corrugated cardboard should be flattened and bundled and placed next to recycling carts.
  • Mops, rakes, brooms and shovels should be tied together and placed on the ground next to carts.  Call 860-638-4858 to let us know its out for pick up.
  • The Sanitation District offers curbside co–collection of food scraps for cart customers and curbside cart collection for restaurants and businesses that generate larger amounts of organics.   Take advantage of this and reduce your costs!
  • On March 3, 2014, the Common Council adopted ordinances, Sections 253-23 to 253-26, which require that all garbage carts and recycling bins be removed from the curbside within 24 hours of pick up. A fine of $25 will be issued for each violation. Please note that each continuing day of noncompliance shall constitute a separate violation.
  • The Sanitation District will provide extra carts at $25/cart/pickup for move outs and clean outs.  Call the office at 860-638-4850 to schedule.
