Complete Streets Committee

Mission

The mission of the Complete Streets Committee is to encourage biking, walking, and public transit on Middletown streets. The Committee will work to facilitate walking and biking connections between neighborhoods, commercial districts, parks, public lands, private institutions, and neighboring communities in order to make our roads safe for diverse modes of transportation.

What are 'Complete Streets'?

To explain, the Complete Streets Committee is excited to share a video about Complete Streets produced by the Jonah Center for Earth and Art in partnership with students from Wesleyan University. Check it out here on the Jonah Center's website: https://thejonahcenter.org/what-are-complete-streets/

History

The Complete Streets Planning Committee was formed in December 2011 as a temporary committee to the Common Council. The City contracted Kent + Frost Landscape Architecture of Mystic, CT in September 2012 to prepare a Complete Streets Master Plan. The plan was completed in March 2013. An updated plan was created in 2023.

On March 7, 2016, Middletown’s Common Council unanimously adopted the Complete Streets Ordinance proposed by the Complete Streets Committee. The ordinance requires the City to consider the needs of all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, users of wheelchairs, and public transit riders when planning transportation improvement projects. It creates an official role for the Complete Streets Committee and helps ensure that our streets and roadways are modified (wherever possible and where costs are justified by the likelihood of significant community benefits) to make them safer, more usable, and more attractive for all residents, not just those driving cars and trucks.

Residents can stay informed about major Complete Streets projects by subscribing to the Jonah Center for Earth and Art newsletter. The Jonah Center keeps its readers informed about projects, especially when citizen support (i.e. sending emails or attending meetings) would help to advance a specific project.
