* NEW * Additional Charge for Curbside Pick up of Mattresses and Box Springs
Mattresses and box springs are accepted at the Recycling Center for free, unless they are wet or have mildew or bed bugs. If residents want a mattress or box spring picked up by the City at the curb, it is an additional $36 for each individual item. Mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic for collection. Mattress and box spring bags are included with the $36 pick up charge at the Department of Public Works.
As noted above, mattresses and box springs can be brought directly to the Recycling Center for no charge, as long as they are dry and do not have mildew or bed bugs. If do not meet the free requirements, they will be charged by weight (minimum charge $10).
For more information view the Bulk Waste Charges (PDF) or call 860-638-4850 for more details. Items must be placed in their respective piles (all the metal together, all the wood together, etc.)
If you live in a large apartment or condo complex, you should contact your management company about a bulk pick up. The City does not collect individually from units in large complexes.
Bulk Waste materials can also be brought directly to the Recycling Center (PDF) for a per ton charge. Materials are weighed on a scale and charged accordingly.
